Diverse flora and fauna await you. Numerous tree species, wildflower and mushroom varieties flourish in the Shuswap’s temperate zone, while large and small animals thrive in its lush habitats.Large numbers of waterfowl and many other birds grace the skies and waterways of the region. In fact, our widely varied habitat of rivers, lakes and wetlands attracts as many as 250 bird species. In the spring and fall the shorelines are a haven for a wide variety of migratory birds. The Salmon Arm Bay is one of only two places in BC where the Western Grebe has established a breeding colony. Huge formations of Sandhill Cranes fly through the region each spring and the many lakes are a favourite fall stop over for Canadian Geese. Tundra and Trumpeter Swans make their winter home here, especially near Chase, where Bald Eagles can also be seen feeding their young . Get your binoculars out to see the Great Blue Heron and Osprey fishing, and maybe even a chance to spot the blue-billed Ruddy Duck or the large Pileated Woodpecker and the Ring-necked Pheasant. At the Salmon Arm Marine Park by the wharf, visit the award-winning Interpretive Centre operated by the Nature Bay Society. The Society has worked to protect the sensitive habitat, creating islands, lagoons, boardwalks, trails, and bird blinds.
